Quinwah are You Talking About?

Quinwah did you say?

Quinoa (/ˈkiːnwɑː/ or /kɨˈnoʊ.ə/, Spanish: quinua, from Quechua: kinwa), a species of goosefoot (Chenopodium), is a grain-like crop grown primarily for its edible seeds. It is a pseudocereal rather than a true cereal, or grain, as it is not a member of the true grass family. As a chenopod, quinoa is closely related to species such as beetroots, spinach and tumbleweeds.

This tasty treat was introduced to me a couple years ago and at the time I paid it no mind unless someone else decided to prepare it for me, even then it wasn’t the kind of attention this amazing little food deserves.

After a year of my amazing sister constantly telling me about it and cooking it all the time I decided to do some ‘vestigatin about this strange thing that I had commonly mistaken as a cousin to steel cut oats.

Just a couple of articles in, I was floored and decided that I needed to be consuming this a little more often than once every few months.

Why so dramatic you say?

Well the biggest appeal for me personally was incredibly high concentration of Manganese in this super-food.

A few of you might be saying go on…… While the rest are saying what the heck is Manganese and why would I want it?

It also plays a role in the clotting of blood, assists in the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates, and is vital for the proper absorption of calcium. In addition, magnesium helps your body utilize thiamin — or vitamin B-1 — and vitamin E. Now I don’t want run on about a topic that has been so thoroughly investigated by much more qualified and knowledgeable resources.

What I can tell you is one very simple recipe that I changed in order to make it gluten free and incredibly HEALTHY. Tabouli!

Tabbouleh (Arabic: تبولة‎ tabūlah; also tabouleh or tab(b)ouli) is a Levantine Arab salad traditionally made of bulgur, tomatoes, cucumbers, finely chopped parsley, mint, onion, and garlic and seasoned with olive oil, lemon juice, and salt.

You will note the recipe listed in the definition above has bulgur in it, just make a simple swap where you replace the bulgur with Quinoa for any recipe you find online and voila you have a delicious, nutritious, and gluten free meal that will put a smile on your face.
